f you work on the water in a vessel, oil rig, tug boat, river barge, port or anything in between, you must understand if you are injured, your job isn’t protected. Your company can terminate your employment at will, for any reason they see fit. However, there are unique maritime laws that protect your rights

If you are injured on the water, did you know your basic rights include:

  • Up to twelve (12 weeks) off work after an injury.
  • Company-paid living expenses.
  • NOT going back to work immediately after any job injury.
  • Company-paid medical expenses that are “reasonable and related” to your injury until you’ve reached Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI). That’s the point at which your doctor says you have healed and recovered as much as you’ll ever be able. At that point, the company is no longer required to pay your medical expenses.
