If your employer has a Foreign Voluntary Workers Compensation policy, you may have additional rights that you’re not aware of. FVWC policies vary greatly, but many of them cover
- Endemic disease. If you contract a disease or illness even outside of the workplace, you can be covered.
- 24-hour coverage. Your coverage is not limited to standard work hours.
- Repatriation expense. The majority of FVWC policies will pay for the expense of returning an ill or injured worker back to the U.S. for treatment. If an employee dies overseas, the policy will also cover funeral expenses and transportation back to the U.S.
- Third-country repatriation. Sometimes third-party nationals working in other countries are covered and have their transportation costs covered if they’re injured.
Like with state workers’ comp, the employee often forfeits their right to sue their employer when they are covered by a FVWC policy. To find out what additional benefits you may have, contact the insurance company that provides your employer with the FVWC policy.
