After about ten days of searching for seven American tourists thrown overboard in the July 3 Gulf of Mexico fishing boat accident , officials have ceased the rescue operation. The charter boat "Erik" capsized after a sudden storm pummeled and sank it near Isla San Luis in Baja California.
Of the 27 tourists and 17 crewmembers aboard, one person was found drowned and 37 others were rescued or able to make it to shore. That left seven passengers still lost at sea. Both Mexican and US Coast Guard search teams were unable to locate the missing passengers.
A San Diego-based company, Baja Sportfishing Inc., operated the fishing boat. The company canceled all trips following the accident stating that they were "devastated by this horrible tragedy." At this time, no action has been taken against the fishing boat operators.
The Young Firm extends their greatest sympathy to the families of those lost in this tragic incident. Their expertise in Gulf Coast maritime law gives them a special insight into the accident and its repercussions. While accidents of this magnitude are rare, they do happen, which underscores the need for every offshore company to take every safety precaution for its seamen and others.
