Restaurant Barge Break Loose; 84 Rescued From Ohio River

Posted on Mar 12, 2011

Eighty-three diners received an unexpected cruise with their dinners when a seafood restaurant on a barge broke from its moorings and floated down the Ohio River.

Jeff Ruby's Waterfront Restaurant in Covington, Kentucky floated almost 100 feet downstream.  A mooring cable prevented the restaurant from being lodged under the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge.

Diners used their cell phones to call for help.  Rescuers and tugboats arrived at the scene.  The diners waited patiently as firefighters secured the restaurant with a safety cable and constructed a makeshift ramp to attach to the barge.  The diners were rescued within hours.  No one was injured.

Towboats kept the restaurant in place over night and towed it back upriver to a new docking site at Covington Landing.

The offshore barge accident remains under investigation; however, it is believed that the high water levels on the Ohio River may have played a role in the incident.  The Ohio River is currently about three feet above flood stage.
