The investigation into a deadly May, 2011 Gulf of Mexico collision between a container ship and a fishing vessel is continuing. The US Coast Guard preliminary findings are that a malfunction on the fishing boat may have caused the accident.
The 163-foot Sandy Point, an Omega Protein vessel, collided with the 660-foot Eurus London on May 18. Three men died and thirteen were rescued following the crash.
According to reports at the time, the Sandy Point struck the larger ship and sank. Three crewmembers disappeared into the water and were not found in time to save their lives. Because the crew was sleeping at the time, prior to offloading their catch, they were probably not wearing life vests.
U.S. Coast Guard Mobile, Alabama sector commander Don Rose said, "Our sense is that there were probably some failures in the Sandy Point. Its propulsion and navigation systems, rudder systems, contributed to their inability to maintain control in the channel."
It may be months before the investigation is completed and the causes of the collision are certain.
The attorneys at The Young Firm in New Orleans express their deep sympathy for the families of the victims in this tragic event.
