A March 14 tugboat collision injured seaman Chadwick Thompson, who has brought suit against his employer, Bayou Tugs Inc., naming Russell Naquin and Beverly Naquin as responsible individuals in his New Orleans federal suit.
The vessel, the M/V John G. Morgan, hit the Belle Chase Bridge twice, causing Thompson injury as he fell forward. Thompson is accusing the defendants of extreme negligence including inattention, unsafe speed, poor training, and dangerous procedures in operating the vessel. The Belle Chasse Bridge, a vertical lift bridge, spans the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in the Plaquemines Parrish.
The plaintiff is requesting damages to recoup lost wages, medical bills, pain and suffering, disability, maintenance and cure, and impairment, among other requests.
This accident is a reminder of just how dangerous maritime employment can be. Oftentimes tugboats can be especially hazardous. In most cases, tugboat workers are covered by the Jones Act, a federal law that allows seamen injured on the job to sue their employers if negligence can be proven.
Negligence often leads to injuries like those sustained by Thompson, and often the only recourse is to seek compensation.
