U.S. Coast Guard responders rescued a 400-pound man who fell down a flight of stairs while working on a tugboat in the Hudson River.
The offshore slip and fall accident occurred at 7:17 a.m. on Tuesday, January 4. The tugboat was pushing a fuel barge when a man fell down the stairs to the engine room. The crew called 911 for help.
At the Coast Guard’s direction, the tug headed towards the dock in Kingston, New York. The plan was for the tug to disengage from the barge at the Delaware Avenue dock, but this was not possible. Instead, Coast Guard personnel intercepted the tugboat half a mile from shore. The injured man was brought aboard the Coast Guard vessel and taken by ambulance for treatment at a local hospital.
The man's knee was dislocated, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
When workers are injured offshore, getting medical treatment can be a challenge. For this reason, it is important that the crew to be trained in emergency procedures. In a serious accident, proper training can save a life.
