Injured Seaman Rescued After Falling Into Frigid water

Posted on Jan 19, 2011

A Nantucket seaman fell into frigid water after sustaining serious injuries while working on a barge.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, January 18, 2010. Forty-eight-year-old Bruce Beebe, an employee of Toscana Corporation, was working with others at Steamboat Wharf in Nantucket.  They were attempting to untie the vessel after unloading cargo at the wharf.  The barge shifted as it was being untied and pinned Beebe against one of the wharf’s bumpers.  The barge shifted again and Beebe fell into the frigid waters

Beebe, who was unconscious, was rescued from the water by his coworkers. He regained consciousness as EMTs and police arrived at the scene.  He was taken to Nantucket Cottage Hospital where he was listed in serious condition before being flown to Boston Medical Center.

Heavy winds and high seas in the harbor made work more difficult than usual that day.  But, thousands of barge workers around the United States work in equally dangerous conditions.   Mr. Beebe was fortunate that his co-workers acted quickly.  A fall into icy water can have serious consequences even for someone who is not injured.   Learn more about cold water and the risk of hypothermia, here.
