The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a seaman from a ship off the coast of San Francisco. The man had suffered serious injuries three days earlier when he was burned by a ship’s boiler.
The maritime injury accident occurred on January 24 aboard the YM New Jersey, a 960-foot motor vessel travelling from Hong Kong to Panama.
The 46-year-old crew member was doing routine maintenance on the boiler when he was injured. He was burned badly, but the ships medical crew treated his injuries and the man was in stable condition. The medical crew later sent a request for additional assistance to a command center in Alaska.
The man was evacuated at about 6 p.m. on January 27 when the vessel was located 60 miles off of the coast of San Francisco. He was taken by helicopter to St. Francis Memorial Hospital to be treated by emergency medical personnel.
This offshore accident occurred on a foreign ship, but American seamen face similar dangers. When you are far at sea, there may be little access to medical care in an emergency. There should be adequate first aid supplies and crews should trained in first aid and in emergency procedures.
