October 10, 2011 - Gulfport, Miss. - Hurricane Katrina left the connection between East and West Ship Island damaged and eroded, and now a new restoration project is set to rejoin the 2 parted land masses.
GulfLive.com provided details on the $300 million first phase of the restoration project which began in September and is part of a 3-phase, $1.3 billion dollar plan to recover from Katrina's damage. During this phase, up to 15,000 cubic yards of sand is estimated to be brought in daily to reinforce the north shoreline of West Ship Island.
Other phases include the actual rejoining of the islands, and reinforcing the southern shoreline of East Ship Island with over 5 million cubic yards of sand. Sediment management is a key to the success of this restoration program, and the first phase of filling in the Camille Cut should help reduce erosion and allow natural rebuilding begin.
Without the restoration project, the coastline and beaches of the Ship Islands would continue to erode, causing environmental and agricultural issues. Barrier islands like the Ship Islands provide a first line of defense for the Gulf Coast when threatened with tropical storm surge.
Projects such as these involve heavy equipment and close work near open water which can often result in maritime injuries. If you're employed in a maritime occupation and suffer injury on the job, you may need to discuss your rights with a maritime law attorney who serves the Gulf Coast area.
