What NOT To Do After a Diving Accident or Other Maritime Accidents, Continued
3. DO NOT give a recorded statement. Your employer's insurance company may request a statement nonchalantly and tell you that they need to have a recorded statement on file. Be wary of giving them any information because they don't need a statement on file. What they won't tell you is that a recorded statement can hurt you, and that they'll absolutely use anything in it, whether it was a misinterpretation, miscommunication or taken out of context, against you and your claim.
4. DO NOT put trust in your employer's promises. Your employer's primary objective is to eliminate liability in the accident and minimize the financial impact your claim will have on their bottom line. Even if you have a good, professional rapport with your supervisors, you should speak with a Jones Act Workers' Compensation lawyer regardless.
5. DO NOT be led to believe that you have to see the company doctor. The truth is that you can see the physician of your choice, and your employer and/or their insurance company must foot the bill either way. Don't be intimidated or cowed into thinking your options are limited to the company's preferred physician.
