Your Slip and Fall Injury May Not Be Apparent at First

After a slip and fall accident while you’re working at a maritime worksite, it may not seem like a big deal at first. You may have some bruises and pain and could need a few days off to let the soreness subside. But what happens when the pain persists and you suddenly lose range of motion, sensation or even experience complete paralysis?

Slip and fall injuries can be a serious matter, even if you don’t feel that bad right after the accident. Sometimes soft tissue injuries take awhile to set in, and nerve damage may not be apparent until later on during your recovery. While your employer may pay maintenance and cure during minor recovery time, if you report more serious injuries they may start giving you trouble.

Under Jones Act law you have the right to maintenance and cure, as well as lost wages during recovery from a maritime work injury. You also have the right to choose your own medical care and do not have to see the company doctor even if your employer tells you that is your only option.

Many maritime workers are unaware of these rights, which lead them to be short-changed when it comes to obtaining benefits and compensation for their injuries. When you’ve suffered serious injury in a slip and fall accident, don’t put off reporting it and seeking immediate medical evaluation. Even if you don’t think your injuries are serious, without a good checkup, you may be stuck with complications in the future that your employer won’t cover.
