Both Colorado State University’s hurricane forecast team and AccuWeather, a private forecasting firm, are predicting an above-average hurricane system for the Atlantic Basin in 2010.
The forecasters are predicting 15 named tropical storms with eight developing into hurricanes. The hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.
Forecasters typically underestimate the number of large storms. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when wind speeds surpass 74 mph. The Colorado State University team expects that four of the hurricanes will develop into Category 3,4, or 5 hurricanes with maximum wind speeds exceeding 104 mph.
Offshore workers in the Gulf of Mexico work in all weather situations. If proper precautions are not taken, their lives are put at risk during tropical storms and hurricanes. It is important that employers maintain vessels and offshore facilities so seamen are not endangered.
If you or a loved one was put at risk and sustained injury because of an unseaworthy vessel or offshore facility, you are protected by maritime law. Contact
