Rehabilitating Louisiana Offshore Crush Injuries

If you have suffered a crush injury at your Gulf Coast maritime job, getting better is the most important concern. If the injury is not severe, you may be treated and released to go back to work. But be sure you are getting the proper rehabilitation if the injury is more severe.

Once the immediate medical dangers have been dealt with after your accident, and complications are controlled, it is time for the healthcare system to bring you back to the best possible condition. Depending on the severity of your injury, you could be treated by:

  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Vocational therapists
  • Psychological professionals

There are several areas of concern when rehabilitation begins:

  • Muscle atrophy: Sometimes range of motion and/or blood circulation can be affected. Exercise must be carefully regulated to minimize these problems.
  • Pain management: Often after operations and long recovery periods, pain may become an ongoing issue.
  • Scar tissue care: Rehabilitation may include massage and desensitization techniques.
  • Anxiety and depression: As with any injury, the stresses of recovery may cause psychological problems that need to be taken as seriously as the crush injury itself.

Rehabilitation after a crush injury can be a long process. We sincerely hope that you are receiving the all-important aftercare that you deserve, and that you are confident in your employer's concern for your Jones Act rights.
