With oil prices up $30 a barrel since last year, energy companies placed $949.3 million in winning bids for federal offshore petroleum leases off the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
Sixty-seven companies submitted 642 bids on 468 tracts in the central Gulf of Mexico. Analysts say the record sale is another sign of an improved economy and that it will provide an employment boost to the area. Some believe the success of the sale means the federal government should open more of the nation’s coastline to offshore oil drilling.
The energy industry is a major employer in the New Orleans area. But, working on or near the water can be very dangerous. Oil rig workers work in extreme weather conditions, they walk on slippery surfaces and deal with explosive and hazardous substances. They must depend on their co-workers to do their job safely. They depend on having a safe place to work and access to the proper training and safety equipment.
If you are injured while working offshore, you have rights. You may be entitled to compensation under the
Jones Act or other
maritime law.
The Young Firm of New Orleans has put together a free guide to advise you of your rights after an offshore accident. If you have been hurt on-the-job, request your free copy of “
Employee’s Guide to Maritime Injury Law.” If you need legal help or have any questions, contact our office.
