On January 25
th President Barack Obama announced that a new sale of areas off the coasts of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi will be held for
oil and gas production.
The sale will include about 38 million acres in the Central Planning Area off the coasts of these 3 states. According to the Interior Department, it is estimated that production in these areas could generate up to 1 billion barrels of oil and 4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
During the State of the Union address earlier in the month, President Obama stressed the importance of finalizing a national offshore energy plan. Part of the plan would make 75 percent of available offshore resources open to be acquired for drilling in both the Gulf of Mexico and in Alaska.
This lease sale is a step toward not only increasing the development of American energy resources, but also creating additional jobs within the U.S.
This may lead to more offshore professions like:
With increases in maritime professions this may also increase the potential for maritime injuries. With more oil rigs in operation there are more opportunities for accidents to occur, which could cause maritime workers or seamen to suffer serious or fatal injury.
If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in an offshore accident you have the right to seek advice and guidance from an experienced Gulf Coast
