Know Your Rights as a Gulf Coast Worker in Confined Spaces

Maybe you have been working in a confined space on a Gulf of Mexico ship and have been hurt. There are many ways this can happen, and safety rules developed by the Coast Guard and the Occupational Safety and Health Association specifically address this kind of work.

The shipping industry employs many workers in both shipbuilding and ship repair. Every ship owner is aware of the regulations for confined space work, so it should be safe to do those types of task. Unfortunately this is not always true. Too many times shortcuts are taken and workers are injured, become sick, or even die on the job.

The Jones Act provides protection for seamen suffering confined space mishaps. You are guaranteed the right to "a safe place to work." In confined spaces this includes:

  • Proper ventilation
  • Well-maintained equipment and machinery
  • Removal of potentially hazardous materials, chemicals and gases

If you have become ill, been injured, or suffered skin irritation from confined space work, The Young Firm in New Orleans may be able to help you. We urge you to call us with any questions about your claim toll free at 866-938-6113. We proudly represent seamen throughout coastal Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida and Texas.
