Hurricane Season 2011 Predict More Activity

August 23, 2011 - September marks the halfway point in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean hurricane season, but so far it's been quiet.

The yearly predictions reported by NOAA were updated in August to raise the quantity of expected named storms. The original season prediction issued back in May still showed that we would experience a more active season, but many May weather factors contributed to an even higher new estimate.

Currently, a tropical multi-decadal signal, warm Atlantic Ocean temperatures, and a possible return of the La Niña weather pattern are all adding to the expectations for more named storms and greater hurricanes.

The original numbers reported in May for named storms rose from 12 -18 to 14-19 and the number of hurricanes to hit increased from the May prediction of 6-10 to 7-10. NOAA predicts that 3-5 of the predicted hurricanes could be major Category 3 or higher.

Even though no storms have become hurricanes, September historically heralds the peak season of hurricanes to develop in the Gulf and Atlantic. NOAA advisors predict that October will be a time to be extra vigilant when working offshore as the bulk of the tropical activity is expected to occur that month.
