Defining Seamen Under Jones Act Law

If you're a seaman injured while on the job, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit under the Jones Act Law. Considering the damages that you endure could cost hundreds and maybe thousands of dollars, it'll be in your best interest to seek help from a maritime lawyer.

How the Jones Act Law Defines Seamen

In order to file a lawsuit and pursue compensation under the Jones Act Law, there are certain criteria you must meet.

First and foremost, you must be considered a seaman. Under the Jones Act Law, a seaman is referred to as an employee who's employed or assigned to a vessel that's in navigation on navigable waters. A seaman must spend 30% or more of his or her time working on the vessel to be able to collect compensation under the Jones Act Law.

A seaman may also pursue compensation for injuries if an accident happened on an oil rig in navigable waters; however, many times this situation falls under Maritime Law. It's necessary to contact a maritime lawyer when this happens.

If you're injured while working as a seaman, you should immediately seek medical attention and get in touch with an attorney. The Young Firm, based in New Orleans, has maritime lawyers who are trained and skilled to fight for your legal rights under the Jones Act Law
