When you spend a significant amount of time in the
maritime industry you probably have cramped quarters, which can make it very difficult to keep up your exercise regimen, assuming you have one. However, there are many things you can do to maintain your cardio, strength training, and flexibility wherever you are.
Finding Space to Squeeze in Ship Exercises
Try to work these 3 tenets of every good exercise regimen into your days.
- Cardio - march in place, run up and down the stairs, jog in place or run in place with high knees, do jumping jacks, side steps, dance, and/or jump rope.
- Strength training - try triceps dips on chairs, triangle wall push-ups, reverse plank, side plank, regular wall push-ups, crunches, squats, resistance band workouts, and/or lunges.
- Flexibility - prop your foot up on your bed or a chair and stretch your hamstrings, use doorframes to stretch your upper body by pushing and pulling against them, and if you are familiar with any yoga poses, definitely work some of those into the end of your workout. Remember to stretch at the end of the workout rather than the beginning so that your muscles are warm and you don’t pull anything.
Exercise can prove to be invaluable at sea. It can help you clear your mind, increase your energy and de-stress. It can also reduce your risk of falling victim to a
maritime accident.
