Congressional Bill Proposes Offshore Rigs in Gulf Used as Artificial Reefs

The Rigs to Reefs Habitat Protection Act of 2011 is a congressional bill that was launched by Senator David Vitter. The bill suggests keeping offshore oil rigs that are not being used in the Gulf of Mexico as artificial reefs for marine life. Many pros and cons have been discussed in this proposal, such as the risk of a repeat of the BP Deepwater Horizon spill, but know that if an accident occurs, a maritime accident attorney in New Orleans can help.

After the catastrophic BP Deepwater Horizon spill, the Department of Interior mandated that all offshore rigs not in use need to be plugged up and extricated within 5 years. On the other hand, many advocates for marine life are saying the rigs have provided habitats and produced adequate fisheries.

Currently, there are about 650 rigs out of more than 3,000 in the Gulf that are no longer active, waiting in line to be plugged and pulled out of the water. The bill suggests that an assessment of the rig's region be conducted to determine if a substantial amount of marine life is present in the area and if removing the rig would severely damage the oceanic habits.

If the bill is passed, maritime workers should expect more work
coming their way as restructuring and maintaining the artificial reefs will be necessary.
