4 Safety Tips to Prevent Maritime Slip and Fall Accidents

Maritime workplaces like docks, ships and oil platforms are areas where there’s a high probability of wet, slick surfaces. While it’s pretty difficult to keep areas like these dry, there are still safety measures you can take to help prevent slip and fall accidents

  • Wear proper clothing – Special work boots or non-slip shoes are a must for keeping your footing when walking on slick surfaces or using ladders or stairs in wet areas. Well-cuffed and secured pants are also important to avoid tripping on loose pant legs.
  • Report damaged equipment – Staircases and ladders that are broken, loose or damaged can create slip and fall hazards even when they’re not wet. Report any hazardous platforms to your employer immediately so they can be repaired.
  • Request safety equipment – If your employer hasn’t done so already, request that anti-slip material be installed in areas that are prone to becoming wet and slippery.
  • Take part in safety training – Many employers offer safety training courses that can help you protect yourself while on the job. If this is not offered, talk to your employer about setting up a course through OSHA or BOEMRE.

Unfortunately, even if you follow good safety practices and your employer complies with all regulations for workplace safety, accidents still do happen. It’s important to understand your rights to recovery and compensation if you suffer serious injury due to a slip and fall accident at a maritime workplace.
